Ben's first wife, Kit Winters, was a Baptist preachers daughter. Ben left her for the Civil War soon after the baby was born. He served in the Second Regiment of Mississippi Infantry and (Army of 10,000 Confederate States of America, Company 'G". He returned home with a badly crippled foot, and to find Kit had sold all the belongings except one mule that Grandpa Moses kept. She left with a man and they spent the night with a family in Memphis, Tennessee. She left the man and boy here. Ben went to Memphis to see the family and they told him they found the boy dead in the yard. Ben and Louise Cofer had three children, Louise and the third child, a boy, died at birth. He next married Victoria McClellan. Soon after Alice was born, she took sick and had to go to her folks where she died. After Ben and Mandy married, they went for Alice. Ben bought 80 acres of land in 1876. Ben and Mandy are buried at Mt. Moriah cemetary.
