Moses was born in Pendleton District, South Carolina to Moses and Rhoda Hughes. He had brothers, Aaron and Mathis. Moses married Sarah Isbell, her parents were Pendleton and Sarah Henderson Isbell. Moses moved from SC to GA about October 1, 1827. He stayed here two years and moved to Jefferson Co, AL. He was listed in the 1830 census. Here he was a neighbor to Isaac Barton. Moses enlisted to fight in the Seminole Indian war, October 26, 1837 for six months, his service was extended 5 months, 14 days making his total service 11 months, 14 days. He was mustered into service at Bellefonte, AL. He was in Captian Richard Griffin's Company, North AL Mounted volunteers commanded by Colonel Benjamine Snodgrass. He was discharged at Fort Michael, AL Moses moved from Alabama to Lafayette Co, MS. He applied for and got 80 acres Bounty land, May 13, 1852. He applied for and received his second 80 acres July 15, 1856. He had disposed of his first 80 acres. Moses sold his property in Alabama on credit. About 1851, Sarah saddled a three year old filly and rode her from Banner to Jefferson Co, AL to collect the money for the place. On the way home she found the Tombigbee River up and couldn't cross. Moses got worried and went looking for her. She was safe at home when he got back. After Sarah died, Moses married Hattie Richards, a widow. They had one child. Moses was living with Elias and Becky Crocker when he died. He is buried at Rocky Mount Cemetary. Becky and her step-son, George Crocker, signed papers for Hattie to draw a pension. She drew $8.00 a month. |
