Notes

In 1880, George Washington Chrestman and his two brothers, John m. and Lawrence S. are living nearby their father, John B Chrestman with their wives and children. All are farmers, as were their parents. George is 32 years old and his wife is shown on the census simply as Mat. It is assumed at this point that her name was probably Matilda, but this is just a guess. Matilda married George when she was about 14 or 15 years old.

In 1900 George is 51 years old, and he does not have a wife. He indicated on the census of that year that he could not read or wr write, which makes it a little more understandable why we find some documents of his with his name spelled Christman and others spelled Chrestman. He was living in Beat 4, Humphrey Precinct near Taylor, Lafayette County Mississippi with 5 of his children:
Annie Belle -23 years old
Lena M.-16 years old
John William-15 years old
Minnie Lee-10 years old
Leona-6 years old

They are living near the families of George's brother, Lawrence S. Chrestman, his nephews John T. Chrestman and Flem J. Chrestman, a Thomas Chrestman, Laura Burk, mother of Rhoda Viola Burk who later married John William.

In 1910, George is found living with his third wife of nine years, W. Ethyl McCoy. They have the following children living with them: Annie Belle, Lena, Minnie Lee, Leona, Vira C. and Velma M. He also has a nephew living with them by the name of Leroy R. Chrestman, the son of Lawrence S. Chrestman, who is 16 years old and single. They are still living in Beat 4 of Lafayette County, Mississippi.

George died in 1939 at the ripe old age of 90 years old and is buried with his fourth wife, Martha Ann Todd, at Shipps Cemetery near the community of Anchor, Mississippi not far from Water Valley. The community of Anchor is on Highway 7, south of Oxford, Mississippi, not far from the Highway 9W split. Shipps Cemetery is an old, well kept cemetery on a scenic spot on top of a hill in the southern part of Lafayette County, Mississippi.
