The records in the Library of Congress show Pvt. Pendleton Isbell enlisted October 7, 1775 for one year in Captain Robert Ballard's company, First Virginia Regiment, commanded by Colonel James Read. He re-enlisted September 7, 1776 for three years; transferred at Morristown, NJ on May 1, 1777 to Commander in Chief's Guard, commanded by Captain Cobb Gibbs. He was at Valley Forge with General George Washington. He was in the Battle of Brandywine, September 11, 1777 and the Battle of Germantown, PA October 4, 1777. He re-enlisted and was furloughed one hundred and ten days, January 18, 1779; deserted Morristown, NJ on February 1, 1780. In 1819 Pendleton applied for pension and was given $8.00 a month. All early Bible records show the Isbells and Hendersons to be of Baptist faith. The 1790 Pendleton District, South Carolina's lists, Pendleton Isbell and wife, Sarah, 3 boys and 1 girl. Brother, Godfrey Isbell is living nearby. Sarah died in 1827 and Pendleton married Margaret lahow in March 1828. They were only married one year when he died. They were living at Fair Play, SC (now Anderson CO). |
