Tobe was born north of Apple Springs in Trinity County, Texas. He came to Henderson County with his parents soon after 1880.
Tobe and Phoebe Jane Darden were married at Murchison, Texas. Phoebe inherited 54 acres land from her parents and Tobe bought 42 acres. This land was near Opelika. He farmed and they reared their children and lived here until their death.
They gave land for a church, which is known as Barton's Chapel. It is an Assembly of God Church. Some of his are members and attend church here.
Uncle Tobe was known for his dry humor.
Uncle Tobe and Aunt Phoebe are buried in the Edom Cemetary
